Sad Movie (Korea)

Sad Movie is a 2005 South Korean romantic comedy film that directed by Kwon Jong-kwan. The film focuses on the stories about four relationships and their trials, pains, heartaches, and subsequent separations. The plot lines eventually connect in some way, but they remain unrelated for the most part.

The first story is about Jin-woo (Jung Woo-sung), who works as a fireman who courted a sign language interpreter named Su-jung. Only one thing that makes their relationship difficult to be forwarded to the level of marriage: Jin-woo refused to release his profession is fraught with peril and often makes the Su-jung to worry.

The second figure is the Su-eun (Shin Min-ah), younger sister Su-jung is mute and has a scar on his cheek. Although often provide support for the sister and the candidate’s brother, Su-eun itself has a problem: while working as a clown in an amusement park, he fell in love with the painter Sang-gyu (Lee Ki-woo). Because of its limitations, Su-eun only be approached Sang-gyu with the costume that she wore everyday.

Ju-yung (Yeom Jung-ah) is the third character in the film, a hard worker who often quarreled with his son Hui-chan. Things began to change when Ju-yung was hospitalized due to hit by a car, Hui-chan started reading the diary of the mother who tells about the birth until the time he grew up. The atmosphere seemed more upset when the latter Ju-yung was sentenced to cancer.

In the course of the story, Hui-chan met with Ha-seok (Cha Tae-hyun), the fourth figure who works odd jobs as a boxer at the target. The hope only one: can get a lot of money to be able to reclaim the love of his girlfriend Suk-hyun (Son Tae-young).

In accordance with its title, Sad Movie actually present four-story full of tears. Although the above stories seem to have its own uniqueness but all still have one theme that is separation. With interesting visual presentation  such as beautiful and colorful, and the accompaniment of background music that suitable, this movie is quite successful and well constructed to make the audience can feel the feelings experienced by each character. The film was relative success, with just over a million admissions in South Korea. It also received a strong showing in Japan, mostly thanks to the popularity of lead actor Jung Woo-sung.
